Today, Chartley Manor invites guests to experience its historic charm and tranquil ambience. The manor has been meticulously restored to provide modern comforts while preserving its historic integrity. Every corner of Chartley Manor tells a story, from its ancient walls and grand fireplaces to its beautifully landscaped gardens. Whether exploring the nearby Staffordshire countryside, delving into its rich history, or simply relaxing in its luxurious accommodations, Chartley Manor offers a truly unforgettable stay.
The original Chartley Manor was established in the 13th century as part of the vast Chartley estate. The house (which was sadly to eventually burn to the ground) was constructed under the watchful eye of the de Ferrers family, descendants of the Norman nobleman Henry de Ferrers, who was granted extensive lands in England following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The family’s legacy is intricately woven into the fabric of Staffordshire, with the current Chartley Manor, built in 1570, standing as a testament to their influence and stature. One of the original manor’s most famous residents was Mary, Queen of Scots, who was held captive there in the late 16th century. Her presence has left an indelible mark on the manor’s history, with many stories and legends surrounding her time within its walls.
